The Microbiologist will carry out all duties related to the microbiological program including management of brewer’s yeast. Additional cross training will include other quality analytical methods. This position will require availability to work any shift and/or weekends.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Performs standardized microbiological testing on all beer and beer ingredients including raw materials and contact surfaces in all areas of production.
Collect sterile samples, perform culture plating functions and read-analyze-interpret culture plates and PCR readings for microbial analyses.
Manage the brewer’s yeast program by monitoring yeast health and maintaining yeast cultures.
Perform microscopic inspection and identification of yeasts, bacterium, molds, and fungi and make recommendations regarding cleaning protocols.
Generate and monitor ATP swab data.
Work with QA and Production personnel to determine root cause and possible solutions for microbial issues.
Prepare and present findings, data, and root cause analysis to management team.
Ensures analytical equipment is properly maintained; comes up with suggestions to upgrade or improve equipment.
Fulfills all analytical requirements of Stone Brewing and is able to document and report all results in an organized manner.
Prepare stock solutions and media plates.
Assists in the maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Must be able to complete, maintain, and analyze laboratory data.
Perform autoclaving and decontamination of the laboratory.
Assist in maintaining a professional and clean lab.
Maintain safety within the brewery and lab at all times.
Effectively communicate with suppliers and service technicians as needed.
Assist in the maintenance and tracking of inventory of archive beer and in-process samples.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, or related field.
Experience: At least 5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of experience and education. Must have experience with Good Manufacturing Practices and Good Laboratory Practices. Brewery or food manufacturing experience a plus.
Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: ASBC, brewing certificate or Cicerone program certificates a plus.
Language Skills: Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and written.
Travel Requirements: occasional travel required to other Stone locations.
